FBI: England vs Argentina Semi-Final 'Highest Risk'

The FBI has classified England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina as the 'highest risk' match of the tournament, following a meeting with FIFA and local police to address historical tensions between the two nations.

Security Measures and Fan Segregation

The FBI, FIFA, and police met on Monday to discuss the historical divide and concerns over potential escalations between supporters. For the match in Atlanta, separate entry gates will be used for each set of fans, even though there is no segregation inside the stadium. This approach has been a theme of the tournament, partly due to ticket resale platforms that have led to fans mixing.

Officials acknowledge they can only do so much once fans are inside the stadium. The Atlanta Police Department has enhanced its citywide public safety posture, deploying additional personnel and resources in and around event venues, entertainment districts, and high-traffic areas.

Political and Historical Context

The rivalry extends beyond football, with Argentina's foreign minister recently reiterating claims over the Falkland Islands, which was swiftly rejected by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. In 1982, 907 people died in the conflict following Argentina's invasion. Argentina's players have chanted songs referencing the Falklands after matches, but coach Lionel Scaloni has tried to focus on football.

Scaloni said: 'The message to the Argentine people is that this is a soccer match. We're going to face a great team with a great coach, but it is just a soccer match, nothing more than that.'

Enhanced Police Presence

Heavy police presence has been reported outside both team hotels, with a major focus around the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Atlanta Police Department stated: 'As Atlanta prepares to host an upcoming FIFA World Cup semi-final match and welcomes increased numbers of residents and visitors, the Atlanta Police Department has enhanced its citywide public safety and security posture. Additional personnel and resources are already deployed and will continue to be strategically assigned in and around the event venues, entertainment districts, and other high-traffic areas to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. These proactive measures are designed to protect the public, deter criminal activity, and ensure residents and visitors can safely enjoy this historic event.'
