A father and daughter from Doncaster have died following an incident at Fistral Beach in Newquay. Devon and Cornwall Police were called by the South Western Ambulance Service at around 9.45pm on Sunday, July 26, after reports that two people had been recovered from the water.
Emergency response
Coastguard rescue teams from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes attended the scene, along with Newquay RNLI lifeboats and an HM Coastguard helicopter. Despite the efforts of emergency services, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s were declared dead at the scene. Police have confirmed they were father and daughter, both from Doncaster.
Families notified
The force has confirmed that their families have been notified and officers have expressed their sympathies. A file will now be compiled for HM Coroner. The police thanked all emergency service personnel and members of the public who assisted.
Appeal for handbag
The woman who died had entered the water carrying a handbag described as orange or peach in colour with a shoulder strap. The leather-style bag, measuring roughly 30cm by 30cm, is believed to hold several personal items of considerable sentimental significance to her family. Officers say the family would find considerable solace in recovering these possessions. Anyone who discovers a bag fitting this description is asked to hand it in to Newquay Police Station or contact police quoting incident number 50260197209.
