Fatalities and injuries have been reported following a serious incident at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta, where reports of a possible explosion sparked a major fire on Saturday, October 17 at approximately 4pm local time.
Defence minister confirms casualties
“I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” Defence Minister David McGuinty said. McGuinty did not disclose casualty numbers or specifics about what prompted the incident, but said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were involved in the investigation and described the situation as “very, very active and delicate.”
The Canadian Armed Forces, alongside federal, provincial and local authorities, were coordinating the emergency response, he said. The neighbouring community of Wainwright was providing hospital and firefighting support.
Fire spreads rapidly in high winds
There have been multiple reports of an explosion which subsequently sparked a substantial fire, spreading rapidly due to strong winds in the region. The Municipal District of Wainwright said the blaze had breached the military base's perimeter fence and was advancing quickly in high winds. Firefighters from several jurisdictions were responding, and no evacuation order was in place.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said his province was sending assistance to Alberta but did not specify what resources were being deployed. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the blaze “significant and tragic”, adding that it was having a considerable impact on military personnel.
Political leaders respond
Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on X: “A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta. Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected. We are working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities. Premier Smith and I are in close contact as are our relevant ministers and officials.”
Carney confirmed that the federal government was collaborating closely with Alberta officials and local authorities, adding that he and Smith remained in regular contact, as did their respective ministers and officials. Smith expressed her gratitude to first responders and those providing care and support to those caught up in the incident.
Canadian Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre revealed he had held talks with Carney and the defence minister, pledging his support to those affected by the fire. “Pray for Wainwright, everyone,” Poilievre wrote in a social media post, urging residents in the affected area to heed emergency instructions and keep roads clear for first responders.
CFB Wainwright, situated approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles) to the southeast of Edmonton, ranks amongst Canada's most active military training bases, where troops are prepared for combat operations. It houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which carries out realistic battlefield exercises, alongside the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, which delivers military training.
