Craig Revel Horwood's marriage to a woman before coming out

Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood was married to Jane Horwood from 1990 to 1992, before later coming out as gay. Their relationship ended when she left him for another man.

Marriage and its end

Craig, who is openly gay, once considered himself to be bisexual. In his autobiography, All Balls and Glitter: My Life, he wrote: "Jane had in fact thought I was gay when we first met. At the beginning of 1990, Jane and I became an item. We resided in a one-bedroom flat in Crouch End, which was very romantic – a bit like Robert Redford and Jane Fonda in Barefoot in the Park."

He added: "I was both gay and straight, so being bisexual, it wasn't a big issue for me or for her. We were two people who loved each other, coming together and wanting to have kids before it was too late."

Reflections on the relationship

Appearing on the How to Be 60 podcast with Kaye Adams in 2023, Craig reflected on his two-year marriage and why it wasn't meant to be. "I'm very lucky that I have a lot of nieces and nephews and godchildren [but] the reason I got married for the first time was for that reason, but she fell in love with someone else, so that's why that ended," he explained.

"But that would have been my opportunity and her opportunity, and I think that's why we made a bond, a love bond, together in that way. That's basically what we wanted, because we felt our time was running out. She was 30, I was 25, so your life's almost over, and we'd better get on with it. But it didn't work out and wasn't meant to be, I suppose."

Life after the marriage

While their marriage ended, Craig has clarified that he and Jane have stayed in touch. "We are friends now, Jane and I, but it wasn't very amicable at the time," he told Wales Online. "Now we can go out for lunch and talk about life honestly. I love her deeply as a friend, now and forever, and wish her all the happiness in the world."

Craig has since found love with horticulturist Jonathan Myring. The couple got engaged while on holiday in Tasmania in 2020 and have had to push back their wedding on several occasions due to Covid restrictions and home renovations. In 2024, Craig reportedly told Woman's Own, "there's a date in the diary for 2027".
