Fatalities and injuries have been reported following a serious incident at a Canadian military base. Reports emerged of a possible explosion at the CFB Wainwright military base in Alberta, Canada, which triggered a major fire on Saturday, 17 October at approximately 4pm local time.
Defence Minister confirms casualties
"I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base," said Defence Minister David McGuinty. While McGuinty declined to provide casualty figures or details regarding the cause of the incident, it is understood that further information will emerge shortly.
He confirmed that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were involved in the investigation and described the situation as "very, very active and delicate." The Canadian Armed Forces alongside federal, provincial and local authorities were co-ordinating the emergency response, he added. The neighbouring community of Wainwright was providing hospital and firefighting support.
Fire spreads beyond base perimeter
Numerous reports have emerged of an 'explosion' which subsequently ignited a substantial fire, spreading rapidly due to strong winds in the area. The Municipal District of Wainwright confirmed the fire had breached the military base's perimeter fence and was advancing swiftly in high winds.
Firefighters from several jurisdictions were deployed in response, and no evacuation order had been issued. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced his province was dispatching assistance to Alberta, though he did not specify which resources were being mobilised.
Political leaders respond
"Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected," Prime Minister Mark Carney said in an earlier social media post. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the blaze as "significant and tragic", adding that it was impacting a large number of military personnel.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney wrote on X: "A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta. Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected. We are working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities. Premier Smith and I are in close contact as are our relevant ministers and officials."
Base details and support pledges
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, situated approximately 180 kilometres (112 miles) south-east of Edmonton, ranks amongst Canada's most active military training bases, where soldiers are prepared for combat operations. It houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which carries out realistic battlefield exercises, alongside the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, which delivers military training.
Canadian Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre revealed he had been in contact with Carney and the defence minister to pledge support to those affected by the fire. "Pray for Wainwright, everyone," Poilievre wrote in a social media post. He called on residents in the affected area to heed emergency guidance and keep roads free for emergency services.
