Ex-cop jailed for stealing from vulnerable victims

A former police officer with Avon and Somerset Police has been sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to stealing from vulnerable victims while on duty.

Sophie Somerset, 34, was convicted at Bristol Crown Court after pleading guilty to multiple counts of theft. The court heard how Somerset exploited her position to target individuals in distressing situations, including an elderly woman who had just lost her husband.

Breach of Trust

The prosecution described Somerset's actions as a "gross breach of trust" that undermined public confidence in law enforcement. Detective Chief Inspector James Riccio stated: "This was a shocking abuse of power by someone sworn to protect the public."

Details of the Crimes

Among the incidents:

  • Stealing £200 from an 82-year-old widow during a welfare check
  • Taking cash from a vulnerable adult's home during a missing person investigation
  • Misappropriating property from a burglary victim

Somerset was caught after colleagues raised concerns about her conduct, leading to an internal investigation.

Sentencing Remarks

Judge Martin Picton told Somerset: "Your actions represent everything the public fears about corrupt officers. You preyed on people at their most vulnerable moments."

The judge noted the significant impact on victims, with one elderly woman becoming fearful of police contact following the theft.

Police Response

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed Somerset was dismissed at a misconduct hearing prior to sentencing. A spokesperson said: "We expect the highest standards from our officers and will always take robust action against those who fall short."
