Teenager on E-bike Allegedly Killed Pensioner While Speeding and Using Mobile Phone
A teenager has been accused of killing an 86-year-old pensioner on a zebra crossing while riding an electric bike at speed and making a mobile phone call, a court has heard. Billy Stokoe, aged 19, faces charges of causing the death of Gloria Stephenson by dangerous driving in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear.
Fatal Incident Captured on Dashcam
The tragic collision occurred on May 16, 2025, at approximately 2:50 pm in Sunderland. Prosecutors stated that Stokoe was riding a Sur-ron electric bike when he collided with Gloria Stephenson as she crossed the road on a zebra crossing. The incident was captured on dashcam footage from a passing motorist, which allegedly showed Stokoe failing to slow down for the crossing and striking Mrs Stephenson directly.
Witnesses reported that Stokoe was speeding and holding his mobile phone at the time of the accident. A total of six witnesses were present in the area, and police conducted intensive forensic examinations, including a post-mortem report. The prosecution emphasised that the offence of causing death by dangerous driving carries a maximum life sentence, with a sentencing range of up to 18 years.
Multiple Charges and Court Proceedings
Stokoe appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court, where he spoke only to confirm his name, age, and that he was of no fixed abode. He covered his face as he left the courtroom, dressed in a blue suit, white shirt, and dark tie. In addition to the primary charge of causing death by dangerous driving, Stokoe faces several other charges:
- Causing death by driving without due care or consideration while over the limit of a controlled drug, specifically a cannabis compound.
- Causing death by driving unlicensed.
- Causing death by driving a vehicle uninsured.
- Failing to stop after a road accident.
- Failing to wear protective headgear.
The case has been sent to Newcastle Crown Court, where Stokoe is due to appear on February 4. Prosecuting barrister Chike Anieto highlighted the severity of the charges, noting that the evidence supports proceeding to crown court for trial.
Family's Heartbreaking Tribute
In a poignant statement following the tragedy, Gloria Stephenson's family described her as a vibrant, active, and intelligent great-grandmother. They expressed devastation at her loss and emphasised that she was full of life, fit, healthy, and had many years ahead to share her love and energy. The family thanked everyone who supported Mrs Stephenson, her daughter, and grandson at the scene of the incident.
The family's statement read: "It is with great sadness that our amazing mam, Gloria Stephenson, was tragically killed on May 16. We are all devastated at the loss of our vibrant, active, beautiful, and intelligent mam, grandma, mother-in-law and great grandma. The press described her as an 'elderly lady'; however, we want to make absolutely clear that our mam was full of life."
They added: "She was active, fit, healthy, and had years left to give her love and share her energy and zest for life with everyone who knew her. The family want to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported mam, and her daughter and grandson at the scene."
This case underscores ongoing concerns about road safety, particularly involving electric bikes and mobile phone use while driving. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances, with the crown court trial set to provide further details on the allegations and potential consequences for the accused.
