Father and Dog Walker Die in Rescue Attempt

A man lost his life after entering the sea at Seaton Carew in Hartlepool on Sunday, July 12, in an attempt to rescue his children from a riptide. A second man, who was walking his dog and joined the rescue, also died. The children survived, according to Davey Short, 48, a painter and decorator from Bishop Auckland who helped rescue one of the children.

Short described the incident as the "worst thing I've seen." He said the family was enjoying a day out when the two younger children began struggling in the waves. The father rushed in to save them, followed by a man walking his dog. Both adults drowned.

Witness Account of the Tragedy

Short recounted that he was sitting on a sand dune when he noticed a child in trouble. He saw a second figure face down in the water and later learned it was the father. Short swam out and grabbed a boy, telling him to "swim to me." With help from another man, he managed to bring the child to shore. All three children were safe, but the father remained in the water for about 40 minutes before rescuers reached him.

The children's mother was hysterical and unable to swim, Short said. He helped her move belongings to an ambulance where the children were checked over. Short, a father himself, said the incident will never leave him: "Every time I closed my eyes I could see the man in the water."

Emergency Response and Support

Cleveland Police and RNLI lifeboats responded to the incident, which spectators called a "major operation." Emergency services remained on the scene on Monday. Specially-trained police officers are supporting the families. Temporary Chief Superintendent Helen Wilson said: "Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by the incident in Seaton Carew yesterday. We are continuing to carry out enquiries on behalf of the Coroner, and officers are supporting the families involved in this incident."

Short expressed his condolences for the dog walker's partner: "They were just having a Sunday walk along the beach and he did everything he could for a family he didn't even know, it cost him his life."
