Cyclist, 72, dies two weeks after crash with pedestrian

A 72-year-old cyclist has died in hospital two weeks after a crash involving a pedestrian in Essex. Steve Ames was rushed to hospital following the incident on West Road at around 4pm on October 8 and died on Thursday, October 22.

Family tribute to 'quite a character'

His family paid tribute to him, describing him as "quite a character and someone who left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him." They said he was a devoted family man with a close bond with his brother, Shaun, and had a soft spot for animals, leaving most of his estate to animal charities.

The family noted his many interests, including his boat, cars, and e-bike, and said that despite living with COPD and asthma, he was always out and about. Earlier this year, he retired and bought a 60-year-old MG, and he enjoyed spending time at his local pub and being on the water.

Police continue investigation

Essex Police said the force is continuing to investigate the incident. Officers have appealed for anyone with information, CCTV, dash cam, or other footage to contact them, quoting reference 0854 of 8 October.

The force added that reports can be submitted online or via its Live Chat service, and anonymous reports can be made to independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.

In memory of Steve, his family urged cyclists to wear a cycle helmet.
