Multiple children are among 18 people injured after a 'serious incident' at an outdoor adventure park in Surrey. A tree collapsed at PGL on Marchants Hill in Tilford Road, Hindhead, sending emergency services to the scene at about 1.40pm on Monday.
Injuries and Medical Response
One person was airlifted to a London hospital with a serious leg injury, while six others were rushed to Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford with less serious injuries. Eleven more people were treated at the scene before being discharged. South Central Ambulance Service crews, along with those from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, attended the scene, supported by police and fire services.
PGL Statement
PGL confirmed the incident and said the safety of children, teachers, and staff was its priority. A spokesperson said: "A number of children were injured and are receiving medical treatment as required. Our thoughts are with everyone affected. The safety and wellbeing of the children, their teachers and our colleagues is our absolute priority. We are working closely with the schools involved and emergency services to support those affected and to ensure families receive timely information through their schools." The statement added that PGL is "committed to supporting everyone affected."
MP's Response
Farnham and Bordon MP Gregory Stafford confirmed there were no reported fatalities but a "number of injuries" in the "serious accident." He said that Surrey Police and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service were working closely with PGL. Stafford added: "My thoughts are with the children involved, their families, and all those affected. I am grateful for the swift and professional response of our emergency services."
About the Activity Centre
The activity centre is home to climbing, zip-lining, and canoeing, and is often a popular destination for school trips. Three years ago, the Surrey adventure park was fined £1 million after two children had their fingers jammed between doors. The company was forced to pay the sum after the children suffered "significant injuries" during a stay at the Hindhead activity centre. The case was brought against the outdoor education provider PGL Travel Limited by Waverley Borough Council.
