Burglar Sentenced for Targeting Elderly in Four-Month Crime Wave

A brazen burglar who stole war medals, a military OBE, and a Rolex watch during a four-month crime spree targeting elderly residents has been jailed. Macorley Collins, 27, of Appleby Close in Adswood, Stockport, committed a string of break-ins from September to December last year, focusing on vulnerable and elderly individuals during daytime hours, according to Greater Manchester Police.

DNA Evidence from Gardening Glove Foils Burglary Spree

Collins's crime wave was ultimately halted when police discovered a gardening glove with his DNA at one of the burgled properties. This crucial forensic evidence linked him to multiple offences, leading to his arrest and subsequent guilty plea. He admitted to 10 offences at Minshull Street Crown Court on Tuesday, receiving a 32-month jail sentence.

Details of the Burglaries and Stolen Items

The burglaries began on September 22, 2025, when Collins targeted a woman's home while she was out for a walk. He stole medication she relied on, along with pearl earrings, gold pendants, and brooches, with an estimated total value of around £3,000. In subsequent thefts, Collins took items including:

  • A PlayStation 5
  • A Rolex watch
  • A Platinum ring
  • Two golden watches
  • A mountain bike worth £3,800

Notably, in one of his final burglaries, Collins stole several First World War medals and a military OBE, highlighting the sentimental and historical value of the items taken.

Police Investigation and Statements

A GMP spokesperson explained that the gardening glove was found in a garden during one of the December burglaries. After forensic examination, DNA obtained from the glove matched Collins, enabling police to map his presence to several crime scenes. He was charged with four burglaries, with six additional offences taken into consideration during sentencing.

PC Lucy Ward from GMP's Stockport district commented: 'Collins committed multiple burglaries in the Stockport area, helping himself to everything from expensive jewellery to family heirlooms. His brazen tactics of operating during the daytime show a clear disregard for people and their property.' She emphasized that thorough investigation, including DNA retrieval, led to his admission of guilt and charges.

Community Safety Message

PC Ward added: 'People should be able to feel safe within their own homes, and we will always investigate burglaries when they come into us. If you have any information or concerns about burglaries in your area, please do get in touch with us.' This case underscores the importance of community vigilance and police efforts in combating property crimes, particularly those affecting vulnerable populations.
