Bradley Belhomme, a 20-year-old from Salford, is fighting for his life after a quad bike crash on the Greek island of Zante, his family has confirmed. The incident occurred on Friday, July 3, just one day after he arrived for a lads' holiday.
Quad bike crash leaves Brit with severe head trauma
Bradley was riding a quad bike with a friend when the crash happened. His friend was also hospitalised but with less serious injuries. Bradley was initially treated at a hospital on Zante but was later transferred to a clinic in Attica, Athens, due to the severity of his condition.
His mother, Leanne Rabbetts, received a devastating call on Friday afternoon. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, she said: "I spoke to him when he arrived, but then on the Friday afternoon I got the call saying there had been a crash. I was thinking 'what the hell happened?'. I had to ring the hospital in Zante at the time, but they couldn't give me much information. Then I got another call that night saying he was being moved to Athens because of the condition he was in."
Family rushes to Athens as Bradley remains in coma
Leanne flew out to Greece on Sunday, July 5, and has been at her son's bedside ever since. Bradley is now in intensive care and in a coma. Doctors attempted to bring him out of the coma but he did not respond. A second attempt on Monday triggered two fits. An MRI scan is planned to assess the damage to his brain.
"The doctors tried to bring him out of a coma yesterday but he wasn't responding. Then they tried again to wake him up today and he had two fits. They don't know if it's a bleed on the brain, so he has to have an MRI scan to see what has happened and the damage to his brain, but he isn't responding at all at the moment," Leanne said.
Community rallies to support family with fundraising
The family believes Bradley had travel insurance for the trip, but they cannot confirm details or access his phone. Friends and the local community have organised fundraising events and walks to help cover hospital bills. Bradley's uncle, Adam, said: "Because of the head trauma, we don't even know when he will be able to come home or the situation. We can't do anything. We are just waiting for the scan and trying to make sure everything is covered at the moment, because if the insurance is invalid it's a big bill."
Bradley is described as "loved by everyone" by his family, who remain at his side in Athens awaiting further medical results.
