Bristol Shooting Leads to Manhunt and School Lockdowns
A man has been formally charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident in Bristol that triggered a widespread manhunt and forced three local schools into a precautionary lockdown. The events unfolded on Wednesday afternoon, causing significant disruption and concern across the community.
Charges and Arrests in Connection with Speedwell Road Shooting
William Scammell, aged 24, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a shortened shotgun after the shooting occurred on Speedwell Road at approximately 1.50pm. The incident involved a targeted attack on a car, resulting in a man in his 20s sustaining potentially life-changing injuries. He remains hospitalised under medical care.
In addition to Scammell, a man and a woman, both also in their 20s, were taken into police custody on suspicion of assisting the offender. They have since been released on police bail pending further enquiries. Scammell is scheduled to appear at Bristol Magistrates' Court on Saturday to face the serious charges brought against him.
School Lockdowns and Community Response
As a direct response to the shooting and the ensuing search for the gunman, three schools in the vicinity were placed into immediate lockdown as a safety measure. Pupils at Bristol Brunel Academy, Two Mile Hill Primary School, and Chester Park Infant School were instructed to remain on-site, with no one permitted to enter or leave the premises until the situation was deemed secure.
Parents at Two Mile Hill Primary School received an urgent email notification explaining the lockdown. The message emphasised that the decision was precautionary and prioritised the safety and security of pupils and the wider community. Similarly, Bristol Brunel Academy communicated to parents that they were following police advice and assured them that all staff and students were safe during the lockdown period.
Police Investigation and Public Reassurance
Avon and Somerset Police have deployed extensive resources to manage the incident, including the National Police Air Service helicopter, which circled the city for about ninety minutes, specially-trained firearms officers, and drone units. An air ambulance was also dispatched, landing at Barton Fields Park to assist with the emergency response.
Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Jess Aston addressed public concerns, stating, 'We understand this has been a very shocking and concerning incident, but we would like to reassure the public that this remains a priority investigation for us.' The police have confirmed that they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with the shooting, though enquiries are ongoing.
To maintain public confidence, neighbourhood officers are conducting high-visibility reassurance patrols in the affected areas, including St Anne's Wood near Brislington and the Speedwell district, where a cordon was established. Residents have been alerted to expect a heightened police presence as the investigation continues.
