An 11-year-old boy had his leg amputated following a horrific shark attack at a crowded beach in Brazil. The incident occurred on Sunday at Piedade Beach in Jaboatao dos Guararapes, near Recife, in the northeastern state of Pernambuco.
Emergency Surgery After Attack
The youngster underwent emergency surgery to amputate his left leg after being mauled by a shark while swimming. His uncle, Aldemir Jose, confirmed the amputation to local media. Fighting back tears, Jose recounted the terrifying moments: "We were all in the sea before the attack. I had just left the water and left the kids in the sea. Then I heard a strange noise and when I turned round all I could see was blood. I didn't think twice and raced into the water to get my nephew out. He was conscious and just kept begging me not to let him die."
Beachgoers and Medics Respond
Beachgoers quickly pulled the boy from the water, and a nurse provided first aid until emergency responders arrived. He was rushed to a nearby hospital. Initial reports indicated the shark bit the child on the left hand and hip. The attack occurred just after 1:30 p.m. local time.
Shark Warning Signs Present
Piedade Beach is open for bathing, but warning signs caution locals and tourists: "Danger - Shark Zone." Danise Alves, executive secretary of the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT), noted that the bathing ban extends from the BarraMares Hotel to the Piedade Church. "Where the boy was attacked, the sign informs that the area is subject to attacks and provides information on when swimming should be avoided," she said.
Rising Shark Incidents in Pernambuco
Sunday's attack is the third in Pernambuco state this year, following two incidents in January. Over the past 34 years, the state has recorded 83 shark attacks, resulting in 27 deaths. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge caution for swimmers in the region.
