Police have confirmed the recovery of the body of 11-year-old Mackenzie Swift, who went missing after entering the River Don near Mexborough, South Yorkshire, on Saturday evening.
Search Operation
The alarm was raised when the young boy failed to resurface from the water, triggering an extensive 48-hour search effort involving multiple agencies. Emergency services, including specialist water teams and drones, scoured the river and surrounding areas.
Discovery of Body
On Tuesday morning, South Yorkshire Police announced that a body had been located. Formal identification is yet to take place, but the force has stated it is believed to be that of Mackenzie Swift. His family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.
Chief Superintendent Sarah Pooler said: "This is a devastating outcome, and our thoughts remain with Mackenzie's loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. I would like to thank everyone involved in the search for their tireless efforts."
The incident has shocked the local community in Mexborough, with residents expressing their condolences and paying tribute to the young boy. A book of condolence has been opened at the local community centre.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing, but police have stated there are no suspicious circumstances. A file will be prepared for the coroner.
