Nicola Mitchell’s feud with Suki Panesar and Eve Unwin is far from over in EastEnders next week, but as tempers flare once again, an emotional discovery could leave her seeing George Knight in a completely different light.
George has been carrying an enormous amount of guilt ever since Eddie Knight’s death, and with the funeral now approaching, those feelings threaten to overwhelm him.
Peacemaking attempts fail
The week begins with Nicola and George at each other’s necks after Nicola reacts badly to Elaine’s attempts to support George. Hoping to stop things getting any worse, Phil Mitchell attempts to play peacemaker between Nicola and George. Unfortunately, his efforts fall flat. Nicola refuses to engage, making it clear she’s in no mood to patch things up.
George’s past questioned
Later in the week, things seem to go from bad to worse for George. The latest blow comes when someone from George’s past questions his decision not to have Eddie buried alongside Gloria. Viewers will remember that before Gloria died, she made it clear she wanted nothing more to do with her abusive, racist husband after finally acknowledging the pain he’d caused their family.
Wanting to honour her wishes, George has remained firm that the pair shouldn’t be laid to rest together. But hearing his decision challenged stirs up painful memories. George can’t stop thinking about the moment he chose not to save Eddie’s life, and despite believing his father deserved to face the consequences of his actions, he’s still haunted by the guilt of standing by and watching him die.
Emotional breakdown at Gloria’s grave
Unable to shake those feelings, George heads to Gloria’s grave, where the weight of everything finally becomes too much. Trying to numb his emotions, he turns to alcohol. Jean Slater and Eve find him sitting alone on a bench, drunk and clearly struggling to cope. While Jean heads off, Eve decides to stay with him, and the pair end up sharing an honest heart-to-heart. George finally starts opening up about the emotions he’s been trying so hard to bury, giving Eve a glimpse into just how much guilt he’s been carrying over Eddie’s death.
It’s an unexpected moment of vulnerability from George, especially given Nicola’s ongoing issues with Eve.
Nicola’s feud reignites
Already frustrated by everything that’s been happening between her and George, Nicola later crosses paths with Suki and Eve. With bad blood still lingering after Eve previously punched Nicola during their long-running feud, it doesn’t take much for old tensions to bubble back to the surface. The confrontation quickly turns frosty, showing there’s still no sign of peace between Nicola and the Panesar-Unwins.
A heartfelt conversation
Growing increasingly worried about George, Nicola asks Harry to help bring George back to Harry’s Barn so she can check he’s okay. Away from the chaos of the Square, Nicola gently pushes George to explain what’s really been eating away at him. As he begins to open up, Nicola responds by sharing painful stories from her own past, creating one of the most emotional conversations the pair have had in a long time.
After weeks of arguments and misunderstandings, they finally seem to lower their defences, with both admitting more than they have in weeks. This raw and honest conversation could be just what the pair needed to get back on track.
But with Nicola still at odds with Suki and Eve, and George’s guilt continuing to cast a shadow over everything, there’s still plenty standing in their way.
The question is whether George’s emotional breakthrough will be enough to help him move on from the past, and whether Nicola can finally put her own battles aside long enough to help him heal.
