Biker dies after tribute ride for boy, 14, with MND

A father has tragically died in a road collision just moments after taking part in a heartfelt motorcycle tribute for a 14-year-old boy who lost his life to motor neurone disease.

A Tragic Journey Home

Chris Bailey was travelling home to Hay-on-Wye on Friday evening after attending the funeral of Kyle Sieniawski. The schoolboy, from Pontypridd, South Wales, passed away last month, just ten months after being diagnosed as the youngest person in Britain with MND. Mr Bailey had joined an 'amazing' motorcycle convoy organised by the Valley Commandos Motorcycle Club Powys as part of the memorial service for Kyle's 'last ride'.

His journey ended in tragedy on the A438 between Glasbury and Clyro in Powys. Dyfed-Powys Police reported that at approximately 4.48pm, his black Yamaha motorbike was involved in a collision with a black Mini Countryman Cooper and a black Volkswagen Polo. The father of a baby boy was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Heartbreak Upon Heartbreak

The devastating news was shared on a Facebook page dedicated to Kyle's battle with MND. His family posted an emotional tribute, stating they were 'absolutely devastated'. They wrote: 'Chris Bailey was a valued member of the Powys Chapter Valley Commandos and to lose his life after doing such an amazing gesture is just cruel beyond words. Our hearts are breaking for his family, and Christmas is just days away... life can be so cruel.'

Paul Borrington, a friend from the motorcycle club, expressed his profound grief, saying he was 'humbled' by the response from those who knew Mr Bailey. 'I have no words for how humbled I feel at being part of this great man's life,' he added.

Remembering Kyle's Courageous Fight

The funeral that preceded the accident was a powerful display of community support for young Kyle. Roads were gridlocked as bikers, many of whom had never met the teenager, flanked the procession, moved by his story. Kyle's illness was exceptionally rare; motor neurone disease typically affects adults over 50, with high-profile sufferers including the late rugby league player Rob Burrow.

Kyle's symptoms began in March 2023 when the sport-loving teen, who practised Taekwondo, noticed his left arm would not move properly. After months of tests, parents Melanie and Mark received the shocking diagnosis in January. The family announced his death in November, describing him as their 'little superhero' who 'fought with all his strength'.

Kyle had been cared for at Noah's Ark Children's Hospital in Cardiff, where an appeal raised over £10,000 to support him and his family. His parents expressed their complete heartbreak, saying, 'We'll think of you every single day, beautiful boy.'

Dyfed-Powys Police are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the stretch of road where Chris Bailey lost his life. The investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision continues.
