A packed Jet2 holiday flight became the centre of a major security scare on Thursday afternoon, forcing a dramatic armed police response at Manchester Airport.
The aircraft, flight LS922 travelling from Dalaman, Turkey, was escorted into UK airspace by rapid-response RAF Typhoon fighter jets after a specific threat was reported. The nature of the threat has not been disclosed by authorities.
Eyewitnesses on the ground described a scene of high tension as the plane touched down. Armed officers were seen rapidly surrounding the aircraft on the tarmac to secure the area and ensure the safety of all passengers and crew.
Passengers Describe 'Terrifying' Ordeal
Passengers onboard reported a confused and anxious atmosphere. "The pilot came over the intercom and said there was a situation and we had to be met by police," one traveller recounted. "It was honestly terrifying not knowing what was going on."
Another passenger added, "Seeing fighter jets out of the window was something you never expect. Everyone was just praying we landed safely."
Major Travel Disruption and Ongoing Investigation
The incident caused significant disruption to Manchester Airport's operations, with ground staff and other flights temporarily halted as a precaution.
A Jet2.com spokesperson said: "We can confirm that flight LS922 from Dalaman to Manchester was met by police due to a security alert. The safety and security of our customers and crew is our absolute priority, and we would like to apologise to everyone affected for the delay and any distress caused."
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they attended the incident as a precaution and that an investigation into the threat is ongoing. The plane was subsequently moved to a remote part of the airfield for further checks.
