Amazon Driver Saves Woman from Hammer Attack by Husband

An Amazon delivery driver has been hailed as a hero after saving a woman's life by interrupting a violent attack at her home in Chisago County, Minnesota. The driver, who was delivering a package on May 11, heard screams coming from inside the residence and discovered a woman covered in blood with a man wielding a hammer, according to a criminal complaint obtained by CBS News.

Quick-Thinking Driver Intervenes

The driver immediately entered the home and ordered the suspect to drop the weapon before calling 911. When deputies arrived, they found the Amazon driver inside with the victim, who was bleeding heavily from her head, arms, and hands. James Alan Johnson, 72, was taken into custody at the scene.

Suspect's Motive

Authorities allege that Johnson admitted his business was on the verge of financial collapse and he intended to kill his wife so she would not have to cope with reduced Social Security benefits. Investigators claim he planned to knock her unconscious before killing her.

The victim told police she was struck twice on the head with a hammer and managed to fight off her attacker by hitting him in the groin. Investigators noted two large, bloody indentations on her head consistent with multiple hammer strikes, according to police reports via KSTP.

Charges Filed

Johnson has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. He is being held at the Chisago County Jail on a $1 million bond. The Amazon driver's brave actions are credited with saving the woman's life.
