Portsmouth's Fratton neighbourhood is far from the postcard-perfect seaside image. While visitors flock to Southsea beach, Gunwharf Quays, or the Historic Dockyard, inland lies Fratton, a residential area known for its compact football stadium and gritty reality.
Deprivation and Crime in Fratton
Fratton ranks among the most deprived 10% in England according to the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2025, with issues spanning income, employment, and education. Locals have taken to Reddit and Facebook to voice frustrations. One Reddit user described it as "very, very grey and built-up," while another lamented fly-tipping nightmares. A Facebook resident bluntly stated, "It's a sh*thole, I am ashamed to live here."
Security guard Nazar Abuzaid, who works on Fratton Road, told Express.co.uk: "It's bad. It's drugs. Shoplifting." He monitors a regular thief daily but maintains strong relationships with most customers. Police data for March and April recorded 42 shoplifting incidents in Fratton and Baffins, alongside 219 reports of violence and sexual offences out of 489 total crimes.
Nationally, shoplifting has soared to record levels in England and Wales, with 530,643 offences in the year to March 2025—a 20% increase from the previous year, per the Office for National Statistics.
Community Spirit Amid Challenges
Despite the tough exterior, many residents appreciate Fratton's convenience. Mother and son Mandy and Danny Metcalfe, lifelong locals, say "it's alright" and "you've just got to hold your own." Mandy notes that the area's central location means everything is within walking distance.
Evelinne Eueale, 20, has lived in Fratton her whole life and describes it as "really nice" with a "great community." She enjoys easy access to the beach, museums, and the Historic Dockyard. Another young mother praised new investments like a two-storey leisure centre in nearby Bransbury Park.
Steve, 59, a tattoo parlour worker who has spent most of his life in Fratton, says it's "alright" and emphatically affirms he likes living there.
Hidden Gems and Match-Day Buzz
Beneath the grey streets, Fratton hides a trendy side. The Staggeringly Good brewery, reminiscent of east London's edgy quarters, offers craft beer. On match days, Fratton Park transforms the area; thousands of Portsmouth FC fans flood the streets, creating an electric atmosphere. Some residents can watch the game from their gardens, while others feel their homes shake after a goal.
Fratton may battle crime and a gritty reputation, but its loyal community, unbeatable convenience, and vibrant match-day spirit make it the beating heart of Portsmouth.
