A man has been arrested as part of an investigation into racist graffiti that appeared in the Rochdale village of Norden. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that the graffiti was found in several locations around the area.
Details of the Incident
The offensive graffiti, which included the phrase 'white women = white death', was scrawled onto a sign and other spots along and around Edenfield Road. A post on social media brought the incident to light, prompting swift action from authorities.
A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage. GMP announced the arrest on their Rochdale Facebook page, stating: 'We are aware of concerns from the community regarding reports of racially aggravated graffiti appearing in locations around the #Norden area of #Rochdale. This morning (Wednesday 17 June 2026), a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage and remains in police custody with enquiries ongoing.'
Community and Police Response
Police are continuing to appeal for information. They urge anyone with CCTV footage or relevant details to contact them quoting log 4000 of 16.06.26. Reports can be made via the GMP website, LiveChat, or by calling 101. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Ward councillor Peter Winkler expressed gratitude for the rapid response. In a Facebook statement, he said: 'Following an incident in the village this morning where some unpleasant and offensive graffiti was written in several places along and around Edenfield Road, I would like to share my thanks to our Area Forum Chairman, Nigel Morrell who was quick to address the report... and both the Community Safety Team and GMP who were equally swift in dealing with the situation, identifying and apprehending the culprit and ensuring that he was taken into custody.'
Winkler added: 'As Norden Ward Councillors we are extremely fortunate and grateful be part of such a strong community network that works so effectively to keep our ward a safe and happy place to live and work.'
