A man has died after falling from a significant height at a construction site in south Manchester. The incident occurred on Greenheys Lane in Hulme at around 3pm on Tuesday 4 March. It is understood he fell from a crane.
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were called to the scene. Police taped off the building site, and forensics officers in white suits conducted investigations throughout the afternoon. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been confirmed.
Main contractor Willmott Dixon confirmed the man was a member of the public who gained unauthorised access to the site at Manchester Science Park. In a statement, a spokesman said: “We can confirm that an incident took place on our site on Greenheys Lane at Manchester Science Park this afternoon, 4 March, involving a member of the public who gained unauthorised access. The site is now closed, and the project team are cooperating fully with the emergency services as they investigate the incident. Our thoughts are with the person’s family at this difficult time, and we will also offer full support to our people and supply chain members on site given the tragic situation that has occurred this afternoon.”
Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly after 3pm this afternoon (Tuesday 4 March) we were called by NWAS to reports of concern for welfare of a man on Greenheys Lane, Manchester. It’s believed that a man has fallen from a significant height, and suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite the best efforts of those at the scene, the man has been pronounced deceased. A scene remains in place whilst we respond.”
