Sussex Police Arrest Man Over Anti-Semitic Social Media Posts

A 44-year-old man has been taken into custody following the discovery of threatening social media posts that specifically targeted Jewish businesses and places of worship. The arrest occurred on Sunday afternoon after police responded to reports of concerning online activity.

Details of the Offensive Posts

The posts, which appeared within the Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign online group, contained explicit calls for Jewish businesses to be targeted with stink bombs. Additionally, the messages suggested throwing ripe fruit and eggs at synagogues, escalating the threatening nature of the content.

Sussex Police officers attended an address in Newhaven to investigate the reports. Upon arrival, they arrested the man on suspicion of multiple serious offences.

Charges and Police Response

The individual faces four distinct charges:

  • Sending offensive, indecent, obscene, or menacing messages
  • Using threatening words to stir up religious hatred
  • Making threats to damage or destroy property
  • Possessing a class B drug

Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh emphasized the severity of the situation, stating: "We acknowledge the deep distress and concern that can be caused by threatening, hateful and anti-Semitic messages to members of the Jewish community, and the wider public."

He further added: "Threats of any kind are completely unacceptable, and anyone who seeks to target individuals within communities of any faith group can expect a robust response."

Ongoing Investigation

The man remained in police custody as of Sunday evening. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation to allow for a comprehensive and thorough investigation into the matter.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in addressing hate speech and threats disseminated through social media platforms.
