A peaceful Italian hillside has become the epicentre of an international religious dispute after a group of holidaymakers from Israel were caught on camera dismantling a long-standing Christian cross.
The shocking incident, which took place on Mount Cagogna in the Umbria region, saw the tourists repurpose the stones to construct a gigantic Star of David in its place, leaving local authorities and the community reeling.
The Moment of Controversy Captured on Film
Mobile phone footage, which has since gone viral, clearly shows the individuals methodically taking apart the simple metal and stone cross. The symbol was not an ancient artefact but a familiar landmark erected by local residents to signify faith and heritage.
In what appears to be a deliberate act, the group can then be seen arranging the scattered rocks into a large, distinct six-pointed Jewish star on the ground. The video has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with accusations of profound disrespect and cultural insensitivity.
Local Outrage and Official Condemnation
The response from the small community of Assisi was immediate and fierce. Mayor Stefania Proietti expressed her "dismay and incredulity" at the act, vehemently condemning the destruction of a symbol that was "dear to the community."
