Hexham MP horrified by racist graffiti at play park

Hexham MP Joe Morris has expressed horror after antisemitic and racist graffiti was discovered at The Sele play park in his constituency. The graffiti, which included offensive language and imagery, was removed by Hexham Town Council on Tuesday after it was reported as a hate crime. Northumbria Police have confirmed that enquiries are ongoing.

MP condemns 'deeply upsetting' graffiti

Mr Morris said the graffiti was 'deeply upsetting' in a community known for its tolerance. 'I was horrified to see the graffiti at the Sele play park. To see antisemitic and racist language and imagery in such a tolerant and welcoming place is deeply upsetting to everyone who calls our area home,' he stated.

He called on the community to unite against hatred, adding: 'I know that the whole community will come together to reject hatred and to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Jewish community across the North East, and with all other communities facing persecution. It is important we allow any investigation to take its course.'

Park reopened after £210,000 investment

The park in The Sele had only reopened on Thursday, July 2, following a £210,000 investment from Hexham Town Council. Mayor Derek Kennedy noted that the park had been well used in warm weather since reopening and described the graffiti as 'incredibly disappointing.'

Councillor Suzanne Fairless-Aitken also condemned the act, stating there was 'no room' for such graffiti, 'especially in a children's play park.' The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from local leaders and residents.
