Baby dies in Atherstone; two arrested on suspicion of neglect

Emergency services were called to a home on Long Street in Atherstone, West Midlands, at approximately 11.50am on Friday, September 11, following reports of a one-year-old girl in cardiac arrest.

Despite efforts by paramedics, the child died at the scene. A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect.

Police statement and investigation

Warwickshire Police said: "Two arrests have been made as detectives investigate the death of a child today, 11 September."

"At around 11.50am we were called to a home in Atherstone to reports of a one-year-old girl in cardiac arrest. Sadly, despite us and our ambulance colleagues making every effort to save her, she passed away. A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and they remain in custody at this time."

Ongoing scene and public appeal

Part of Long Street remains closed, with a significant emergency services presence still at the scene. Police thanked residents for their understanding and said officers will remain in the area.

The force added: "We know many will find this news upsetting. Officers will be in the area for the time being - please speak with them if you have any concerns."
