Merseyside Police have launched an unusual investigation after a woman attempted to open a bank account in Southport while claiming to be global superstar Taylor Swift.
The incident occurred at a bank branch in the coastal town of Southport, Lancashire, where the impersonator presented herself as the multi-Grammy award winning artist. Banking staff quickly grew suspicious of the claimant's identity and alerted authorities.
Swift Response Prevents Financial Fraud
According to police statements, the attempted fraud was thwarted by vigilant bank employees who recognised inconsistencies in the woman's story. The would-be Swift was unable to provide sufficient documentation to support her extraordinary claim.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed: "We can confirm that a report was received of a woman attempting to set up a bank account whilst claiming to be someone else. The woman left the bank before the incident was reported to police."
Search Continues for Pop Star Pretender
Despite the failed attempt, authorities are treating the matter seriously and continue their search for the impersonator. The incident has raised concerns about identity verification processes within financial institutions.
Southport residents have expressed both amusement and concern about the brazen attempt. Local business owner Sarah Jenkins remarked: "You'd think if you were going to impersonate someone to open a bank account, you'd choose someone less famous than Taylor Swift."
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident or the woman's identity to come forward as their investigation continues.
