Sydney Mother Rehana Memon Accused of Defrauding NDIS of $1.2 Million in Lavish Lifestyle Scheme
Sydney mother accused of $1.2M NDIS fraud scheme

In a case that has sent shockwaves through Australia's disability support community, a Sydney mother faces serious allegations of systematically defrauding the National Disability Insurance Scheme of more than $1.2 million.

Rehana Memon, 37, appeared before Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday facing multiple fraud charges relating to her company, Disability Support Services NSW. Prosecutors allege she created false documentation and fabricated support workers to illegally claim funds from the scheme designed to assist Australians with disabilities.

The Lavish Lifestyle Funded by Alleged Fraud

Court documents reveal the staggering scale of Memon's alleged deception. Between October 2020 and March 2022, she is accused of submitting hundreds of fraudulent claims for services that were never provided.

The ill-gotten funds allegedly financed an extravagant lifestyle far removed from the scheme's intended purpose. Detectives uncovered evidence of luxury international holidays, designer handbags from Louis Vuitton and Gucci, and premium electronics purchased with the stolen money.

Double Deception: Carer Payments While Working

Adding to the alleged scheme, Memon simultaneously claimed Carer Payment and Carer Allowance from Centrelink, telling authorities she provided full-time care for her disabled brother. However, investigators found she was actually working full-time hours at a separate accounting job during this period.

This dual deception allowed her to allegedly collect both fraudulent NDIS payments and unwarranted carer benefits, creating a substantial illegal income stream.

The Investigation Unfolds

The scheme began to unravel when NDIS fraud investigators noticed irregularities in Memon's claims. A thorough examination revealed fabricated support worker profiles, forged signatures, and claims for services during periods when the alleged recipients were overseas or otherwise accounted for.

Australian Federal Police executed a search warrant at Memon's Pemulwuy home in March 2022, seizing documents, electronic devices, and luxury items believed to be purchased with the stolen funds.

Legal Proceedings and Community Impact

Memon has been charged with obtaining financial advantage by deception and dealing with proceeds of crime. The case has been adjourned until October 25, when she is expected to enter a plea.

This case highlights growing concerns about the vulnerability of the NDIS to exploitation. As Australia's landmark disability support scheme, the NDIS represents a critical lifeline for thousands of vulnerable Australians, making alleged fraud cases particularly damaging to public trust.

The National Disability Insurance Agency has emphasised its zero-tolerance approach to fraud and its commitment to protecting scheme participants from such exploitation.
