Police in Adelaide have launched an urgent investigation after the manager of a popular city restaurant vanished alongside approximately £16,000 in staff wages, leaving employees in financial turmoil.
The Mysterious Disappearance
Leonardo Moreira, who managed the well-regarded NINA restaurant on Melbourne Street, North Adelaide, failed to appear for work last week and has not been seen since. Concern grew rapidly when staff discovered their wages had not been processed as expected.
"He was a really nice guy, very friendly," one shocked staff member revealed. "We're all completely devastated by what's happened."
Financial Fallout for Staff
The disappearance has left approximately 20 employees facing significant financial hardship, with some owed up to £2,000 in unpaid wages. Many are international students and migrant workers who rely on this income for living expenses and tuition fees.
One affected worker expressed their distress: "This money was for my rent and food. Now I don't know how I'll manage."
Restaurant's Response
NINA restaurant has confirmed the situation and is cooperating fully with police. Management has assured remaining staff and customers that the establishment remains operational while they work to resolve the payroll issues.
The restaurant released a statement saying: "We are deeply concerned about this situation and are working to support our affected staff members during this difficult time."
Police Investigation Underway
South Australia Police have confirmed they are treating the case as a serious matter and are following several lines of enquiry. Detectives are appealing to the public for information regarding Moreira's whereabouts.
A police spokesperson stated: "We're conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this disappearance and the missing funds."
The hospitality community in Adelaide has expressed shock at the incident, with many local businesses offering support to the affected staff members.
