Major Drug Bust: London Man Admits Intent to Supply Thousands of Litres of GBL
A 61-year-old man has pleaded guilty to possessing with intent to supply more than 2,000 litres of GBL, a drug closely linked to spiking incidents and the chemsex scene, according to the Metropolitan Police. The substantial haul was uncovered during a coordinated police operation targeting organised crime networks in the capital.
Joint Investigation Uncovers Cross-Country Drug Network
Following extensive joint police investigations, authorities discovered that significant quantities of GBL were being transported from Manchester to London, while crystal methamphetamine was being supplied in the opposite direction. This cross-country operation highlighted the sophisticated nature of the drug distribution network.
Officers arrested Ahoor Ramabark Fathi last month and conducted searches at multiple locations connected to the suspect. During these operations, police discovered a storage container rented by Fathi containing 2,256 litres of gamma butyrolactone (GBL), packaged in 188 boxes with one-litre bottles.
Additional Firearms and Cash Discovered in Raids
At one of three addresses linked to Fathi, investigators made further alarming discoveries. Police found a firearm, ammunition, approximately £100,000 in cash, and 456 grams of crystal methamphetamine. These findings underscored the serious criminal enterprise behind the drug operation.
Fathi, residing on Willowbrook Road in Southall, pleaded guilty at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday to multiple charges including possession with intent to supply Class A and Class B drugs, possession of a firearm and ammunition, and possession of criminal property.
Metropolitan Police's Specialised Crime Unit Leads Investigation
The Metropolitan Police's specialised crime unit employed advanced investigative techniques, including cell data analysis, to locate the three addresses connected to Fathi. These properties were situated in two locations in Ealing and one in Southall, demonstrating the geographical spread of the criminal operation.
Understanding the Dangers of GBL and GHB
GBL is a precursor substance that converts to GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate) inside the human body. According to NHS sexual health information, GHB is an odourless, oily liquid typically sold in small bottles or capsules. The drug's effects can persist for up to four hours and may render individuals incoherent or comatose.
Medical authorities note that the margin between a recreational dose and a potentially fatal overdose of GBL can be less than one millilitre, making it an exceptionally dangerous substance.
Police Statement on Community Impact and Investigation
Lead investigator Detective Inspector Mark Gavin emphasised the devastating impact of controlled drugs on London communities. "Controlled drugs continue to have a devastating impact on communities across London, driving harm, exploitation and wider criminality," he stated.
"This is one of the largest discoveries of GBL in London and we are pleased that we have halted its distribution throughout the city. The misuse of GBL and crystal meth tend to be linked to serious offences. We know that drug-related offences often pose a barrier for victims, resulting in the crimes going underreported."
Detective Inspector Gavin further explained the police approach: "It is our duty as officers to ensure the safety of Londoners and urge victim survivors to come forward. We will continue to work hard to disrupt and root out organised crime groups that supply harmful drugs to our communities."
Sensitive Approach to Chemsex Scene Concerns
The Metropolitan Police acknowledged the "sensitivities and concerns" surrounding recreational drug use within the chemsex scene. Authorities confirmed they are collaborating with charitable organisations to address these issues with appropriate care and consideration for vulnerable individuals.
Fathi is scheduled to be sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on July 23, where the full consequences of his criminal activities will be determined by the judicial system.
