Amazon has placed all UK customers on red alert as a new wave of scam emails targets users, aiming to steal personal data. The fake messages, which feature Amazon branding and appear legitimate, claim that unusual activity has been detected on the recipient's account and that access has been temporarily suspended.
The email reads: "We have detected unusual activity on your account. For your security, we have temporarily limited access to your account. Please verify your identity to restore full access." It includes a link that supposedly reactivates the account but instead directs victims to a fake page designed to capture login credentials and other sensitive information.
Rise in Attacks During Summer
With the summer holiday season approaching, cybercriminals are intensifying their efforts. Express.co.uk has reported a noticeable increase in such email attacks. Amazon itself has warned users about the dangers, stating: "Big shopping moments attract big crowds, and they’re also when staying alert on bad actor activity matters. Scammers use every channel—email, phone calls, social media, and text messages—to impersonate trusted brands, particularly during busy shopping periods."
Amazon emphasizes that it will never request sensitive information outside of its official website or app. The company advises customers to verify suspicious messages by contacting Amazon Customer Service directly, but warns against using contact information provided in the suspicious message.
How to Stay Safe
Amazon recommends checking order status exclusively through the "Your Orders" page on Amazon.com or the Amazon Shopping app, as only legitimate purchases will appear in order history. Users are urged to think twice before responding to unsolicited messages, handing over details, or clicking on links.
For reporting suspicious activity, Amazon provides a self-service tool that can be used in just a few quick steps. Customers are encouraged to use this resource if they encounter any dubious communications claiming to be from Amazon.
