Sam Neill, the celebrated actor best known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78. His family confirmed the news in an emotional statement shared on his Instagram account on Monday, 13 July 2026.
Family Statement and Circumstances
The statement read: "It is with immense sadness that the whanau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free."
The family expressed gratitude to the staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for their care and asked for privacy as they navigate the loss. More details are expected to be shared later.
Cancer Battle and Recovery
In 2022, Neill was diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He took a brief break from acting to undergo treatment. After chemotherapy proved ineffective, he pursued a new therapy and earlier this year announced he was cancer-free.
Tributes and Legacy
Following the announcement, tributes poured in from fans. One wrote: "Such a good human, I shall put my dinosaurs out for him and open a nice wine. Thanks for being you Sam." Another said: "This is devastating. I really wish this was not true. Love to family."
Neill's most iconic role was as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, a role he reprised in subsequent sequels. His career spanned decades, with notable performances in films such as The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, and the television series Peaky Blinders.
