Tragic Police Pursuit Crash Claims Lives of Expectant Couple in California
A pregnant woman and her boyfriend were tragically killed this week when a driver fleeing from law enforcement officers crashed into their vehicle in Pomona, California, according to official authorities. The devastating incident has left families and the local community in profound mourning.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The sequence of events began at approximately 9:30 p.m. on April 1, as reported by local news outlet KTLA. Officers from the Pomona Police Department were conducting an interview with a victim of domestic violence in the 400 block of East 10th Street. During this process, the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Marshall Judson, returned to the location in a pickup truck.
Authorities stated that Judson struck a patrol vehicle before speeding away from the scene, which initiated a high-speed police pursuit through the city. The chase concluded when Judson's truck collided with a sedan near the intersection of Garey Avenue and County Road. The occupants of the sedan, 25-year-old Jennifer Loera Zarco and her 26-year-old boyfriend, Marc Trejo, were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Heartbreaking Loss of an Unborn Child
Zarco was eight months pregnant at the time of the fatal crash. The couple had eagerly anticipated the birth of their son, whom they had already named Elliott, with a due date of April 20. Family members revealed to KTLA that the pair were merely minutes away from reaching their home when the collision occurred, adding a layer of cruel irony to the tragedy.
"We just had her baby shower and she was so happy and excited," Zarco's sister, Amber Torres, told reporters. Zarco was the youngest of four sisters and was reportedly thrilled about becoming a mother. Another sister, Andrea Solorio, expressed the family's struggle to process the loss of someone they believed would have been an exceptional parent.
"I just can't imagine what she was feeling or going through," Solorio said. "I think she definitely would've done a good job [as a mother] and it's sad that we won't get to see that. We didn't even get to meet the baby. But I know she definitely would've been the best mom that she could be."
Suspect Faces Multiple Serious Charges
According to police investigations, Judson was operating the vehicle without a valid driver's license at the time of the crash. Following his arrest, officers reported discovering a firearm and various firearm components inside his truck. Judson has been formally booked on suspicion of several serious criminal charges.
These charges include vehicular manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, driving under the influence, felony evasion of law enforcement, and multiple firearm-related offenses. The legal proceedings are expected to advance as authorities continue their thorough examination of the incident.
Families Launch Fundraising Campaign
In the wake of this heartbreaking event, relatives have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and related costs. The fundraising effort has thus far raised just over $22,000 from compassionate donors. The campaign page describes Zarco and Trejo as individuals "filled with so much love for the people around them and even more for each other."
The families aim to provide a respectful service that celebrates the lives of the couple and their unborn child. "We want to give them a respectful service that celebrates who they were and how much they were loved," the GoFundMe statement reads, highlighting the deep affection and community support surrounding this tragic loss.
