‘Jekyll and Hyde Monster’ Jailed for 16 Years After Brutal Assault Leaves Girlfriend Paralyzed

A man described as a "Jekyll and Hyde monster" has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for a vicious attack that left his girlfriend permanently paralyzed. Robert Easom, 57, was convicted by a jury of wounding with intent following the assault on Trudi Burgess, which marked the culmination of eight years of controlling, coercive, and violent behavior.

Eight-Year Reign of Terror Documented in Phone Notes

Ms Burgess, also 57, meticulously recorded the abuse in the notes app on her phone, detailing not only severe physical assaults but also what she termed "low-level events" that became normalized in her life. She described living in a relentless cycle where Easom would oscillate between verbal or physical abuse and subsequent apologies and affection, creating a toxic environment of fear and manipulation.

On February 17 last year, when Ms Burgess finally told Easom she was leaving him, he responded with a ferocious attack that severed her spinal cord, resulting in permanent paralysis. In a desperate attempt to cover his tracks, Easom called for an ambulance and falsely claimed she had "an accident" and "fallen out of bed," highlighting his deceitful nature.

Victim Impact Statement Reveals Devastating Consequences

In a powerful victim impact statement read to the court, Ms Burgess articulated the profound and lasting effects of the crime. "This crime has taken away everything I built, planned for and enjoyed," she said. "It has robbed me of my health, my independence, my ability to care for my family, my career, my freedom and my peace of mind."

She emphasized that each day is now a physical, emotional, and mental battle, with permanent injury leading to constant pain, limitations, and heartbreak. Ms Burgess lamented that her children and granddaughter have lost the mother and grandmother they once knew, and she is forced to live a life she did not choose—one she would not wish on anyone.

"This isn't just a physical injury, it is the destruction of a life," she stated, noting that the pain extends beyond her to everyone who loves and cares for her. She urged the court to consider not only the brutality of the attack but also the ongoing, permanent consequences she faces.

Warning About Easom's Dual Personality

Ms Burgess also expressed grave concern for anyone who might become involved with Easom in the future, whether romantically or otherwise. She described him as having a "true Jekyll and Hyde personality," capable of being a loving and attentive partner one moment and transforming into a terrifying monster the next.

"He could switch in a moment into a truly terrifying monster, restraining me, dragging me round the room, screaming threats at me. All of which were dismissed moments later," she recounted. "I am living proof of the devastating effects of his uncontrolled bursts of anger."

Legal Proceedings and Additional Charges

Easom, formerly of Longridge Road, Chipping, was convicted by a jury of wounding with intent. He had previously admitted to engaging in coercive and controlling behavior between July 2017 and February 2025, as well as two offences of actual bodily harm. In addition to the 16-year prison sentence, Easom will serve an extended licence period of four years, ensuring prolonged supervision upon release.

This case underscores the severe and lasting impact of domestic violence, highlighting the importance of recognizing coercive control and the dual personalities often exhibited by abusers. The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the justice system's role in addressing such heinous crimes and protecting potential future victims.
