Dale Cole Found Guilty of Murdering Partner After Years of Violent Abuse

A man described as a violent bully has been convicted of murdering his vulnerable partner following what prosecutors called sustained and horrific abuse over several years. Dale Cole, 39, was found guilty at Stafford Crown Court of killing Lisa Holland, also 39, who died after a fatal fall at their home in Burton-on-Trent.

Years of Abuse Culminated in Tragic Death

The court heard that Cole subjected Ms Holland to prolonged physical violence and controlling behavior throughout their relationship. Prosecutors detailed how the abuse escalated on October 20, 2022, when Cole returned home from work to find the front door locked. After gaining entry around 4:30 PM, he flew into a rage that led to a violent altercation at the top of the stairs.

Crown counsel Edward Brown KC told the jury that Ms Holland either fell or was placed at the bottom of the stairs following the attack. Cole then took photographs of his unconscious partner on her own phone at 4:49 PM but waited approximately 90 minutes before calling emergency services at 6:23 PM. West Midlands Ambulance Service attended their Victoria Crescent address, where Ms Holland was pronounced dead around 7 PM.

Graphic Evidence Revealed Extent of Injuries

A post-mortem examination revealed devastating injuries, including signs of at least 40 broken ribs. Medical evidence indicated that at least 30 of these fractures had been inflicted in the weeks and months preceding her death, demonstrating the prolonged nature of the abuse.

During the trial, jurors were shown graphic photographs that Cole had taken of Ms Holland as she lay fatally injured on the stairs. Text messages read to the court revealed Ms Holland had repeatedly complained of pain, aching, and being unable to conceal her bruises with makeup after beatings by Cole.

Pattern of Control and Violence

The prosecution presented evidence showing Cole exercised extreme control over Ms Holland, who struggled with alcohol dependency and was particularly vulnerable. Analysis of her bank account revealed more than 50 deposits from the Department for Work and Pensions between January 2019 and October 2022, with approximately £35,000 transferred to Cole with references including debt to society and Lisa loves Dale.

Neighbors reported hearing slapping sounds, repeated arguments where Ms Holland was told to shut up, and frequent crying. Family members testified they had noticed black eyes on at least three occasions, which Ms Holland had blamed on their dog or walking into furniture.

Defendant's Testimony and Conviction

Cole, who walked between the dock and witness box with crutches, admitted to punching Ms Holland four times at the top of the stairs after finding she had been drinking following a period of abstinence. He claimed she had hit out at him and kicked him first, describing the incident as an altercation.

The defendant admitted giving Ms Holland black eyes and punching her during their relationship but denied stamping on her or kicking her. He stated he struggled to cope with her drinking and would lose control and lash out when she drank for days at a time, though he claimed he never intended to cause serious harm.

In addition to murder, Cole was found guilty of three counts of grievous bodily harm with intent. He had previously admitted to controlling or coercive behavior toward Ms Holland between October 2018 and October 2022.

Family Statement and Prosecution Response

In a statement released through Staffordshire Police, Ms Holland's family expressed their profound devastation, describing her as an incredibly beautiful lady both inside and out whose death had left an unmeasurable void. They thanked the investigation team, Crown Prosecution Service, and barristers for their work in securing justice.

Lorraine Anson from the Crown Prosecution Service stated: Dale Cole subjected Lisa Holland to sustained and horrific abuse over several years. He was violent and controlling throughout their relationship, and his callous conduct resulted in her death. She emphasized that prosecutors worked closely with Staffordshire Police to build a strong case presenting the full extent of the abuse to the jury.

The conviction marks the conclusion of legal proceedings that exposed years of domestic violence culminating in tragedy, with Cole now facing sentencing for his crimes against his vulnerable partner.
