In a case that has sent shockwaves across the nation, Janbaz Tarin has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the horrifying murder of his wife, Raneem Oudeh. The Old Bailey heard the chilling details of how Tarin, in a premeditated act of extreme brutality, doused Ms. Oudeh in petrol and set her alight in the street.
The court was told that the 21-year-old victim had been attempting to escape her husband's coercive and controlling behaviour. On the fateful night of August 28, 2023, she had been out celebrating her birthday with her mother, Khaola Saleem, at a shisha lounge in Solihull. Tarin, who had been hunting for them, launched his savage attack outside Ms. Saleem's home in Northdown Road, Birmingham.
Prosecutor Simon Denison KC described the murder as 'exceptionally brutal', stating Tarin had carried it out 'in cold blood, in revenge for her rejection of him'. The attack was witnessed by neighbours and captured on a doorbell camera, presenting the court with undeniable and harrowing evidence.
In a final, cruel act, Tarin was heard to say 'Are you proud of yourself?' as his wife lay dying. He then fled the scene, only to be apprehended by police hours later. Ms. Oudeh suffered unsurvivable burns and died in hospital a short time later.
In a victim impact statement, Raneem's mother, Khaola Saleem, who was also injured in the attack, said: 'I have lost my best friend and my whole world has fallen apart.'
Sentencing Tarin to life with a minimum term of 32 years, Mr Justice Wall KC condemned the 'truly terrifying' and 'calculated' nature of the crime, stating it was a clear case of 'so-called honour-based violence'.
