Gas Explosion in Rome Injures Three, Dozens Evacuated

Gas Cylinder Blast Devastates Residential Street in Rome Suburb

A severe gas explosion ripped through a quiet residential area on the outskirts of Rome on Sunday afternoon, causing significant structural damage, injuring three individuals, and prompting the emergency evacuation of dozens of residents. The blast, which occurred in the Piana del Sole district, tore through multiple apartment buildings, scattering debris across a wide radius and creating a scene of chaos and destruction.

Elderly Couple Critically Injured in Devastating Incident

Among those most severely affected were an elderly married couple, identified as Michele De Bari, 84, and Chiara De Bari, 86, who were the owners of the property where the explosion is believed to have originated. Both sustained 20% burns and were transported to the nearby Sant’Eugenio Hospital, where they remain in critical condition. Additionally, a 24-year-old man was rescued from the rubble and also taken to hospital for treatment, though his current status has not been disclosed.

The force of the explosion was so immense that it propelled debris up to 300 metres away, according to reports from Corriere della Sera. A local resident described the terrifying moment, stating, "We heard a deafening bang coming from the house across from ours: debris struck everything — the large window, my son’s car, the gate — everything was destroyed." Fortunately, this resident, along with his wife and dog, escaped physical harm.

Emergency Response and Investigation Underway

In total, five apartment buildings were impacted by the blast, leading emergency services to instruct 70 people to evacuate the area for their safety. Firefighters, local police, Civil Protection units, and healthcare workers swiftly responded to the scene, working diligently to secure the area and assist those affected.

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri expressed his concern and gratitude, saying, "I want to extend my thoughts to the injured, wishing them a speedy recovery, and I want to thank the firefighters, local police, Civil Protection, and healthcare workers, as well as the City Council and the president, who are all here to offer support and assistance to those in need. We won’t leave them alone." He noted that the building at the epicentre of the explosion is now "completely destroyed," with surrounding structures suffering extensive damage, some of which may be rendered uninhabitable.

Preliminary investigations suggest the explosion was caused by the detonation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders buried in the rear garden of the De Bari property. Mayor Gualtieri commented, "Firefighters will determine the cause. It appears to be a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder in one of the houses. The power of the explosion is quite impressive." Authorities are now assessing how many residents will require temporary relocation due to the unsafe conditions.

Historical Context of LPG Cylinder Accidents

Such incidents involving LPG cylinders are not isolated events globally. Intense heat and malfunctioning pressure release valves are frequent culprits in these dangerous explosions. For instance, a similar blast in Chile last month resulted in at least four fatalities, while another in India back in 2012 claimed the lives of 20 people. These tragedies underscore the potential hazards associated with improper storage or handling of gas cylinders, highlighting the need for stringent safety measures and regular inspections to prevent future occurrences.

As the community in Rome begins the arduous process of recovery, the focus remains on supporting the injured and displaced while investigators work to pinpoint the exact cause of this devastating explosion.
