A former husband has been formally charged by an Ohio grand jury for the alleged double murder of his ex-wife and her new husband, a shocking crime that unfolded in their Columbus home last month.
Grand Jury Brings Formal Charges
A Franklin County grand jury indicted Michael David McKee on 16 January, according to court records. The 39-year-old vascular surgeon faces charges of aggravated murder and aggravated burglary. The indictment specifies that a firearm suppressor was used during the alleged offences.
McKee is accused of fatally shooting 39-year-old Monique Tepe and her 37-year-old husband, Dr Spencer Tepe, a dentist, in their residence on 30 December. McKee and Monique Tepe had been divorced since 2017. At the time of the killings, McKee was living and working in Chicago.
Evidence and Arrest Details
Authorities tracked McKee to Rockford, Illinois, where he was apprehended last weekend. He waived his right to an extradition hearing on Monday and is currently being held. His next court appearance in Winnebago County, Illinois, is scheduled for 23 January.
Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant revealed in a recent interview that investigators now believe McKee is the individual captured on video walking down a dark alley near the Tepe home on the night of the murders. His vehicle was also identified in the area. Crucially, a firearm recovered from his Illinois residence forensically matched evidence collected at the crime scene.
The arrest ended nearly two weeks of intense speculation. The case drew national attention due to its mysterious circumstances: there were no signs of forced entry, no weapon was initially found at the home, and nothing was stolen. The couple's two young children and their dog were unharmed inside the house.
Community Tips Praised by Police
Chief Bryant emphasised the critical role played by the public in advancing the investigation. She stated that emails, phone calls, and messages to the Columbus Police Department provided vital information that helped gather enough evidence for an arrest.
"We want to thank our community specifically for stepping up, reaching out, giving us the information and being open to sharing that with us," Bryant said. "It has been tremendous." She encouraged people to continue submitting any relevant tips.
The hospital where McKee worked, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, has stated it is cooperating fully with the investigation. No attorney is currently listed for McKee in the court documents.
