Disabled Woman Rescued After Five-Year Captivity in $1 Million Houston Home

A disabled woman has been rescued after allegedly being held captive for five years by her husband in their $1 million Houston mansion, surviving on as little as a single egg a day, according to authorities. The victim was finally freed on Friday morning after her husband, James Earl Johnson, 46, accidentally left his phone on a nightstand, giving her a brief opportunity to call 911.

Desperate Call Cut Short by Alleged Assault

Harris County criminal court documents state that Johnson reportedly slapped his wife, carried her back to bed, and disconnected the 911 call before police could intervene. The victim had been locked inside a bedroom of the 6,783-square-foot home she shared with Johnson and their children, with investigators discovering she had no access to a phone, regular food, or adequate medical care.

A probable cause order obtained by The Independent alleges that Johnson left her just one egg daily and occasionally brought her dinner. The rescue came after years of alleged confinement, with the woman previously attempting to alert authorities. On November 16, police were called to the home, but she told officers she and her children had been instructed to stay quiet, leading to no report being filed.

Arrest and Charges Filed Against Husband

Johnson was arrested on Friday and charged with injury to a disabled individual and abandoning or endangering a child, elderly individual, or disabled individual. He works as a full-time master electrician earning approximately $18,000 per month and purchased the five-bedroom, eight-bathroom home in 2015, living there with his wife for at least six years, according to county property records.

Court records show the victim had filed cases against Johnson in Harris County family court in 2001 and 2002 seeking child support, though the outcomes remain sealed. Neighbors were reportedly unaware of the captivity, and the woman's adult son confirmed she remained hospitalized on Monday but did not provide details on her condition or disability.

Legal Proceedings and Potential Penalties

Johnson was released from jail on a $50,000 bond and ordered to stay away from the victim and their home on Crown Ridge Court in Clear Lake. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000. He is due back in court on March 18 for further proceedings.

This case highlights severe allegations of domestic abuse and neglect, with authorities emphasizing the victim's prolonged suffering and the critical role of the accidental phone access in her rescue. The investigation continues as police and legal officials work to ensure justice and support for the victim.
