Tragic Death of 12-Year-Old Boy After Alleged Forced Consumption of Boiling Water
A 12-year-old boy in Indonesia has died after being forced to drink boiling water, with reports indicating he identified his stepmother as his abuser moments before his tragic passing.
Hospital Bed Identification of Alleged Abuser
Nizam Syafei was rushed to hospital in Sukabumi, West Java, in the early hours of February 19 after suffering extensive injuries. Medical professionals discovered he had severe burns to his oesophagus consistent with consuming scalding water. In a heartbreaking scene captured on video, the boy was asked from his hospital bed who was responsible for his injuries. He reportedly pointed at his stepmother and said "Mummy" before succumbing to his wounds later that same afternoon.
History of Alleged Domestic Violence
The child's father, Anwar Satibi, 38, revealed that his son had previously been a victim of domestic violence at the hands of the same woman in 2025. Anwar had filed a police report against his wife at Sukabumi Police Station over earlier alleged abuse, though the case was mediated after she apologised and promised to change her behaviour. The father emphasized that the report was never formally withdrawn.
Anwar alleged that Nizam was frequently beaten whenever he argued with his stepmother's adopted sons, while her other two children faced no such punishment.
Discovery of Injuries and Medical Assessment
Anwar stated he was at work the night before his son's death when his wife called to report the boy had developed a high fever. Upon returning home, he was shocked to find Nizam covered in blisters and burns, despite the child having been in good health that morning. His wife reportedly claimed the blisters appeared naturally whenever the boy had a fever.
Doctors at the hospital determined that the pattern and severity of the burns strongly suggested the child had suffered abuse. Local media reported his body showed injuries consistent with both physical violence and burns.
Ongoing Investigation and Forensic Examination
An autopsy is currently being conducted to establish the exact cause of death. Sukabumi Police Criminal Investigation Unit chief AKP Hartono confirmed that an investigation is ongoing while officers await forensic results. The case has drawn significant attention in Indonesia, highlighting concerns about child protection and domestic violence.
The tragic incident underscores the vulnerability of children in abusive household situations and raises questions about the effectiveness of mediation in domestic violence cases. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Nizam's death as the community mourns the loss of the young boy.
