Musa Ahmed, the seven-year-old boy injured in the West Mersea beach tragedy that killed his mother and sister, has died in hospital, his family announced.
Death confirmed by family
In a statement released on Wednesday, the family said Musa died on Tuesday evening at the Royal London Hospital, where he had been airlifted after being rescued from the water. They described his passing as occurring “in a state of ease and peace”.
Musa’s mother, Shelina Rahman, 41, and his 15-year-old sister, Sameeha, were declared dead at the scene after six family members got into difficulty off the Essex coast on Tuesday, 22 July.
Incident details
The family, from Ilford in east London, had travelled to West Mersea near Colchester for a day out when the tragedy occurred. Emergency services were called at about 5.35pm after reports that several people were in trouble in the water.
Three other relatives were pulled from the sea and taken to hospital by ambulance. Essex Police previously said they were recovering from their injuries.
Ongoing investigation
The family thanked the doctors and nurses in the hospital’s intensive care unit for the “outstanding care and dignity” shown to Musa during his final days. Police enquiries into the circumstances of the incident remain ongoing.
