A mother of four from Newport died after suffering serious burns in a garden fire, an inquest opening has heard. Katie Louise Marshall had placed a black bin bag on the fire, but there was a paint cannister in the bag that exploded.
Burns and hospital transfers
The 32-year-old, of Vaughan Williams Drive, Newport, suffered burns to around 50 per cent of her body, the inquest at Newport Coroners' Court heard. Ms Marshall was first taken to the Grange University Hospital before being transferred to Morriston Hospital's specialist burns unit in Swansea after the fire on June 26 this year.
The inquest was told that she started showing significant respiratory failure and was transferred to Bristol Royal Infirmary. Sadly, she died around two months following the incident, on September 24.

In the days following her death, tributes posted on social media remembered Katie as a "kind" and "beautiful" mother who "touched the hearts of so many people." Her family and friends released pink balloons and set off pink fireworks as a memorial the day after her death, on September 25.
Senior Coroner Caroline Saunders said the inquest is due to resume on June 9, 2027, at 11am.
