Loose Women returned from a break on Monday with a breaking news update on the investigation into Ann Widdecombe's death. Host Christine Lampard revealed that counter-terrorism police are now leading the inquiry after new information and evidence came to light.
Breaking News Announcement
Christine Lampard, who fronted the panel alongside Gloria Hunniford, Brenda Edwards, and Coleen Nolan, made the announcement live on air. She stated: "Welcome back, just before the break we were talking about Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead on Thursday. In the last few minutes, police have revealed the counter-terrorism police are now leading the investigation into her death. The police have just said new information and evidence has come to light. So a very much developing story."
Background on Ann Widdecombe's Death
The former Conservative politician and Reform UK spokesperson died on Friday, July 10, at the age of 78. Her agent confirmed the death but did not provide a cause. Subsequently, police launched a murder investigation and arrested a 28-year-old white British man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Initially, authorities stated there was "nothing to suggest it was politically motivated."
Counter-Terrorism Involvement
Counter Terrorism Policing South East has now taken over the investigation, citing "new information and evidence." Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also issued a statement, saying: "The police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon."
Ongoing Coverage
Christine Lampard added that the show would provide further updates as the story develops. Loose Women airs daily from 12.30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
