Alan Titchmarsh: Simple Addition Makes Patios Feel Bigger This Summer
Alan Titchmarsh: Easy Patio Addition for Bigger Feel

Alan Titchmarsh has revealed a straightforward method to enhance small patios, turning them into inviting outdoor rooms for summer. In a TikTok video for his series Gardening with Alan Titchmarsh, the gardening expert demonstrated how to transform neglected patios using painted planters and strategic planting.

Patios as Forgotten Spaces

Titchmarsh noted that patios are often overlooked in gardens. Many homeowners place a few pots and outdoor furniture, but the area can still feel incomplete. He said: "They are just crying out now for the planting that will see us right the way through the summer to turn this dining area into an area you are dying to be in."

Framework Plants for Height and Structure

To create a focal point, Titchmarsh introduced framework plants into his planters. He explained: "I want height, I want to create floral and foliage walls and something that gives you a stained glass window effect." He recommended evergreen varieties like Ilex crenata and Pittosporum, which can stay in planters year-round. "When the summer flowers fade, you can whip them out for autumn, winter and spring plants," he added.

Container Colour and Flexibility

Titchmarsh emphasised the importance of container colour: "Warm neutral tones, like clay, beautifully complement almost any flower colour or green foliage, helping the planting stand out even more." He highlighted the flexibility of this setup, allowing summer flowers to be swapped for seasonal plants throughout the year. In the video caption, he wrote: "A patio doesn't have to be just a place for a few tired pots and a table, it can become a beautiful outdoor room you'll genuinely want to spend time in."

Year-Round Appeal

The gardening expert concluded: "With the right balance of structure, height, and colour, even the smallest patio can become a space you never want to leave." His tips offer a simple, cost-effective way to revitalise outdoor spaces for the summer and beyond.
