The government is facing mounting pressure over its failure to implement crucial justice reforms promised in the wake of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel's tragic murder in Liverpool nearly two years ago.
Despite pledging swift action to protect vulnerable witnesses and victims, ministers have yet to bring forward the long-awaited Criminal Justice Bill, leaving campaigners and opposition parties demanding immediate progress.
A Promise Delayed
Labour's shadow justice secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has accused the government of "dragging its feet" on legislation that could prevent further tragedies. The proposed bill includes measures specifically designed to address witness intimidation - a key concern in cases like Olivia's, where community fear can hinder prosecutions.
"It is unacceptable that nearly two years after Olivia's murder, these vital protections remain stuck in parliamentary limbo," Ms Mahmood stated.
Liverpool's Heartbreak
The case shocked the nation when Olivia was fatally shot in her own home in Dovecot, Liverpool, on August 22nd, 2022. Thomas Cashman was later convicted of her murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 42 years.
The tragedy highlighted critical gaps in witness protection and community safety measures, prompting government promises of comprehensive reform.
What the Bill Would Change
The proposed legislation includes several key measures:
- Enhanced protection for witnesses vulnerable to intimidation
- Stronger sentencing for those who threaten witnesses
- Improved support systems for victims' families
- Measures to address community safety concerns
A government spokesperson defended their record, stating: "We are absolutely committed to ensuring victims are supported and protected, which is why we're investing more in victim support and have already introduced measures to help witnesses give their best evidence."
However, with each passing month, concerns grow that political delays are putting vulnerable individuals at risk and undermining public confidence in the justice system.
