The blaze broke out in the early hours of Wednesday, July 1, 2026, prompting a large emergency response. Incident Details

Emergency services were called to the property at approximately 3:30 am. Firefighters from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service arrived with five appliances from Tynemouth, Byker, South Shields, and Gosforth Community Fire Stations. The North East Ambulance Service dispatched three ambulance crews, a rapid response paramedic, a clinical team leader, a duty officer, and three Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) resources, supported by the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

A second man, in his 70s, was rescued from the property and taken to hospital for further treatment. The man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene. The fire has left visible damage, including a blackened hole in the roof and a damaged upstairs window.

Detective Inspector Barry McAtominey of Northumbria Police appealed for information, stating: “This is an absolutely devastating incident in which two people have tragically lost their lives. All of our thoughts and condolences are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Enquiries remain at a very early stage, and with the support of our partners from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service we are determined to establish exactly what happened.” He urged anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the emergency call was received at 3:27 am, and firefighters rescued persons from the property and extinguished the blaze. The North East Ambulance Service noted that one patient was taken to hospital by road.
