Ashton-under-Lyne Murder: Man Dies After Bar Attack

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in a 'violent and shocking' early hours attack at a bar in the centre of Ashton-under-Lyne.

The man, aged in his 30s, was found with serious injuries but was sadly pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services, police said. A 36-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

The man is said to have been 'seriously assaulted' during an altercation inside Olivers Bar on Bow Street. Police officers who were first on the scene provided first aid, but he 'became unresponsive and stopped breathing'.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said officers attended at around 2:40am on Saturday, July 11. 'Officers... immediately started to provide first aid to the male victim who then became unresponsive and stopped breathing,' the force's Major Incident Portal reads.

GMP have confirmed a cordon remains in place on Bow Street. The scene is in the centre of Ashton, near Ashton Market. Senior detectives described the man as the victim of a 'violent and shocking attack'.
