Devon and Cornwall Police have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of murdering former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokesperson Ann Widdecombe. The arrest was made at an address in South Yorkshire on Friday evening, July 10.
Discovery and Timeline
Widdecombe, 72, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Dartmoor, at approximately 11:40 AM on Thursday, July 9, after suffering serious injuries. Police revealed on Friday afternoon that they believe she was attacked around 12:30 PM on Wednesday, July 8—nearly 24 hours before her body was discovered.
Investigation Details
The force stated that the incident is not believed to be politically motivated. Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP from 1987 to 2010 and later became a spokesperson for the Reform UK party. A press conference is scheduled for 10:45 AM on Saturday, July 11, to provide further updates.
According to police, the arrested man remains in custody. Authorities are continuing their inquiries and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
