Neighbours of a man arrested on suspicion of murdering former Conservative politician Ann Widdecombe have reported seeing him place “some kind of wooden stick” into the passenger side of a red car before driving away on the day she died. Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home on Dartmoor, Devon, on Thursday with a serious head injury.
Arrest 300 Miles from Crime Scene
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested on Saturday in South Yorkshire, nearly 300 miles from Widdecombe's residence. Police have not yet confirmed the exact nature of the weapon used, but the neighbour's account suggests a wooden object may have been involved. The man remains in custody for questioning.
Police Appeal for Information
Devon and Cornwall Police have urged anyone with information to come forward. In a statement, a spokesperson said: “We have received over 120 reports from the public so far, and we continue to appeal for dashcam footage or any sightings of a red car in the Dartmoor area on Thursday.” The force has not ruled out other lines of inquiry.
Last Known Message
Widdecombe's last known message was sent just 11 minutes before her death, according to sources close to the investigation. The content of the message has not been released, but it is believed to be a text to a friend. Police are analysing her phone and digital records as part of the ongoing probe.
Political Career Remembered
Ann Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP from 1987 to 2010 and later became a television personality, known for her appearances on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson described her as “a formidable force in British politics and a true character.”
The investigation continues, and police have confirmed that a post-mortem examination will take place to determine the exact cause of death. No charges have been filed at this stage.
