FIFA has confirmed that England defender Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-game ban following his red card against Mexico in the World Cup round of 16. The 23-year-old Bayer Leverkusen centre-back was sent off in the 54th minute of the match at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for a dangerous challenge on Jesus Gallardo.
Incident and Dismissal
Quansah brought down Gallardo with a high tackle. Although he made contact with the ball, his right leg was raised dangerously high and caught the Mexican player. After a VAR review, referee Alireza Faghani showed Quansah a straight red card without hesitation. The red card initially ruled him out of the quarter-final against Norway in Miami, but FIFA has now extended the suspension to include the semi-final should England advance.
Impact on England's Campaign
England will face Norway in the quarter-final on Saturday without Quansah. If they win, they will also be without him for the semi-final against either Argentina or Switzerland. The ban is a significant blow to England's defensive options as they aim to progress further in the tournament. Quansah's absence will require manager Gareth Southgate to reshuffle his backline.
According to FIFA, the suspension is automatic for serious foul play, and the two-match ban is standard for a straight red card in such circumstances. England have not announced an appeal.
